The 5 Engineering Design Stages may be seen as the middle man; a framework for taking the ideas created through our mental processes, verifying their fessiblity and finally transferring them to production or working drawings so the product idea may be communicated on to the next step towards final production and purchase by the end-user.  While your not asked to follow these stages in the same manner and with the same results as a professional for the design department might do, it can provide a solid framework for a project timeline.

The 5 stages are listed as being:

1. Identify the Customer and the Problem

2. Generate Concepts

3. Compromise Solutions

4. Models and Prototypes

5. Production/Working Drawings
